What is a question? It is a doubt. An enquiry.
When will be able to buy this? Does he love me? Is this enough for my family? Am I going to be ok? Will my friend ever forgive me? How do I go ahead from here? Why did this happen to me?
It might seem silly to state this, but you have a question only when you don’t know the answer. A lack of knowing causes a question to be raised. Emphasis on the word “know”. You question only when you don’t know. When something is not a part of your existing experience. It is a completely new situation. Something that has never happened before within your conscious awareness. It is not there in your memory. That’s how you know that you don’t know something. When you have a doubt about it. When you are facing something completely new.
In a way, it is impossible for your questions to end. An answer to your question only gives rise to more questions. Reality is always going to keep changing. It is always going to be new. Your knowing is always going to be of the old. Your past experiences can never include your present and future reality. You are always going to face something totally new throughout your life. Your questions will never come to an end.
Let us first see what happens when a question arises within you. There is a state of anxiety and distress that almost always accompanies a question. The mind does not like it when it cannot resolve something. It hates the fact that it does not know. Technically it is impossible for the mind to resolve a question because the mind consists of the past and the question is because of the new. Both of them can never meet.
Every question is a desire to know.
